Sometimes a parent may be concerned that their child is having 'social' difficulties. Sometimes, another professional working with your child may also express concern. A diagnosis of Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) might be suitable to account for these difficulties but ASD is more than just a child's difficulties in the social arena.
The assessment of a child for ASD is very complex. Unfortunately there is not one single test which covers the whole spectrum of strengths and weaknesses as shown by children who may qualify as having ASD. Fortunately, there are specialists in assessment and the diagnosis relies on a number of assessments and observations opinions of experienced clinicians such as, but not limited to, psychologists.
In the case of ASD, assessments are highly specialised and usually require multiple professionals. Recent changes have been made to formulating an ASD diagnosis and you may be aware that the term 'Asperger's Syndrome' can no longer be used.
Due to her time commitments, and the increasingly specialised assessment tools required, Dr Byrne is happy to complete the IQ assessment in conjunction with an ASD specialist but will no longer complete the ASD diagnosis herself. In some instances, she may be able to refer you to a specialist in the ASD field.
In all cases of a Dual Diagnosis, Dr Byrne's IQ report will focus on educational and other accommodations for a child with dual needs. Please also see the Dual Diagnosis/Twice Exceptional page.
